ALL CHANGE STARTS WITH A DECISION TO CHANGE!
So what's the difference between coaching and
Therapy/Counseling - Coaching is not therapy or counseling. Coaches don't work on "issues", get into the past or deal much with understanding human behavior. I believe you are great just as you are and so we will focus on the becoming and where you want to go, not where you have been. Increased knowledge about yourself may come as you move forward toward personal and professional goals that will give you the life you really want, but it will not be the focus of a coaching relationship. Coaches are looking through the windshield, not in the rear view mirror. Coaches may work in tandem with therapists in certain situations.
Best Friend - A best friend is wonderful to have. But is your best friend a professional you will trust to work with you on the most important aspects of your life and/or business? Best friends do not easily tell you the truth nor do they generally have the skills and training to move you forward in the best way possible. You hire a coach to tell you the truth, not just what you want to hear, so there is no risk that the truth may hurt the relationship.
Consulting - Coaching is a form of consulting - all coaches are consultants, but few consultants are coaches. For example, if you were interested in learning how to ride a bike, a consultant would show you how to balance yourself, where the brakes are, and perhaps point out flaws in your riding technique.
In contrast, a coach would do all of the things the consultant does and then continue to run along side you to make sure you avoid the potholes and support you going up the hills. A coach will stay with you to implement the skills and changes that are crucial to your long-term success.
The following questions will give you an idea of some of the powerful and artful questions a coach may use to help clients expand their awareness and move forward:
1. Does work serve my life or is it the other way around?
2. Am I clear about my values and living my life accordingly?
3. Do I use my work (or anything else) to avoid personal and relationship issues?
4. What am I tolerating?
5. Who do I want to become?
6. What would I create for myself if I had a magic wand?
7. Would I like to consider writing a mission statement for my life? if so, would it be the same for my work life as it would be for my personal life?
8. How often do I feel a sense of serenity and when do I feel most complete?
9. Where on a scale of 1-10 is my emotional intelligence? In other words, how in tune am I with my emotions?
10. How healthy are my relationships with my family, significant other, employees, boss, friends?
11. Do I feel out of control?
12. WOULD I LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO BE MORE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT?
13. WOULD I LIKE MORE JOY AND FUN IN MY LIFE?
14. What energizes me?
16. Whose life am I leading anyway?
THE GOAL IS FOR YOU TO LEAVE THE COACHING CALL IN A
BETTER PLACE THAN BEFORE THE SESSION, TO FEEL ENERGIZED AND BE WILLING AND ABLE TO TAKE SOME ACTION!
